Welcome to Montgomery, Alabama.

Montgomery is the capital of the U.S. state of Alabama. The second largest city in Alabama, it is located on the Alabama River in Montgomery County (of which it is the seat) in south central part of the state. Montgomery is notable for its association with the Civil War for being the first capital of the Confederacy and the Civil Rights Movement, including the famous Montgomery Bus Boycott.

Incorporated in 1819, the city was named for General Richard Montgomery, who died in the American Revolutionary War attempting to capture Quebec, Canada. Montgomery was the fifth capital of Alabama.

The Montgomery Bus Boycott was a political and social protest campaign started in 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama intended to oppose the city's policy of racial segregation on its public transit system. The ensuing struggle lasted from December 5, 1955 to December 21, 1956 and led to a United States Supreme Court decision that declared the Alabama and Montgomery laws requiring segregated buses unconstitutional.

The Montgomery Museum of Fine Arts is the oldest fine arts museum in the state of Alabama. Founded in 1930, the Museum holds an outstanding collection of American paintings, Old Master prints, Southern regional art, and decorative arts. The MMFA also hosts an interesting array of temporary exhibitions and educational programs throughout the year.

The Montgomery Zoo was established in 1920 as part of Oak Park. It grew and thrived there until the 1960s. Eleven years later, the Zoo was re-established and moved to its current located in north Montgomery. In 1989, the Zoo underwent a major expansion encompassing over 48 acres and 700 different species of animals.
